SHMonsterArts & SHFiguarts Special Effects Diorama Workshop Special Edition "Type 3 Machine Dragon, Standing in the Sea at Sunset"

A workshop to take cool diorama photos of special effects taste, special edition after a long time!
今回は、「S.H.MonsterArts 3式機龍」(販売終了)を使って、夕日の海のジオラマを作ります!
At the end of "GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA", the famous scene where Type 3 machine dragon, who finished the battle, sees off Godzilla to the sunrise sea.
It is a diorama that I imagined.
The teacher of diorama production is special art designer Toshio Miike of Tokusatsu Institute!
A large veteran who has worked on numerous special effects movies such as the Heisei Gamera trilogy and the Millennium Godzilla Series,
You will be taught the techniques unique to special effects!
* When using cutlery, tools, paint, adhesive etc, please read each instruction manual and use it correctly, so please be careful not to get injured or accident etc.

海面を作ろう!

First of all, let's create the sea.
This time, we express the sea surface using blue PVC board.
Because the machine dragon is immersed in the sea to the waist, according to the size of the waist yen Cut it out in shape.
Since this is the positioning of the 3 types of machine dragons, let's calculate the finish of the photo and decide the clipping position!

It is a flat board as it is,
By putting a wave pattern here, I will bring out the sea surface.
Use woodworking bonds and sponges!
Sponge is OK for kitchen use.

I will put a woodworking bond around the periphery of the cut-off to fit the machine dragon.
Then I use a sponge and hit it from above.
As ripples spread around the machine dragon, yen It is the point to beat in the form!

When dried with a dryer, the white color disappears and only the three-dimensional effect of the surface remains.
Repeat this several times to emphasize the three-dimensionality of the waves little by little.
A wave sheet is completed now!
ホリゾントを作ろう!

Next, let's create the background horizon. The theme this time is the evening sky!
First, put a light blue color paper on a styrene board to make it a base.

As in the last time, I draw clouds in pastel and take depth to the background.
100 pastels yen You can get it at the shop.
Let's draw in reference to the photos of the sky actually taken in the evening.
First, let's outline the thin, thin clouds with white pastels.

The feature of the evening sky is not only red.
The point is that the position of the sun is low.
The area of the shadow on the clouds is larger than in the daytime.
Let's boldly cast shadows in yellow, red, brown, etc.

As the sun hits from the bottom, if you put a white pastel highlight below the clouds, it will look like a cloud of the sunset.

Finally, rub the surface with your finger to make it familiar and bring out the softness of the clouds.

This completes the Horizont!
It is a large cloud that is boldly drawn in brown, and the scale feeling of the sky in the evening scene is beautifully expressed.
As expected, Mr. Miike!

In order to express the sun this time, I drill a hole in the horizont with a cutter knife and fit a light bulb.
(Let's not use because the light bulb is dangerous)
撮影しよう!

Finally, it is a setting for shooting.
In front of Horizont, install a machine dragon and a PVC plate on the sea surface.
PVC board, such as styrene board cut, let's raise to the height of the waist of machine dragon.

In the finish, the waves are drawn with white paint so that the ripples spread around the machine dragon.
Good, sea surfaceness came out.

Let's illuminate the horizont from below with the LED light.
Covering the light with orange cellophane will result in a sunset red sky.

Turn off the room and make lighting.
Use a small light to illuminate the machine in the setting of the setting sun.
From a low position, it will become like a sunset when it is pointed with directionality.
Well, what kind of picture will it be?

The picture taken is like this!
The sun of a light bulb made a sun road on the surface of the polyvinyl chloride board, and the sea of a beautiful sunset was finished. The light comes from the side, so the sea surface irregularities made by woodworking bonds are alive.
A thin and fluttering cloud at the back shows the depth of the sunset sky.
The illumination is from the side, and the machine dragon has a cool shadow.

Here is one of Miike's shots!
Indeed, the expanse of the sky at dusk is beautifully expressed!

When the orange filter is removed from the light,
You can also take a photo of the sunrise image like this.
INTERVIEW 三池敏夫

-"This time, I made a miniature set of the sea surface to match the Type 3 machine dragon.
At the end of "GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA," which I also participated in, I made a sea set with the image of the machine dragon that finished the battle. To express the sea, for example, in museum dioramas, it is made of transparent resin to express the depth, but this time it is a method that can be done as easily as possible, so I hit a PVC board with wood glue to create waves. expression.
-Is this method used in the field of special effects?
In fact, when taking special effects at a shooting station, I do not do the sea of PVC boards. The sea is expressed by expressing it with agar, or creating a shallow set pool by actually storing water. PVC boards are sometimes used in rivers and oceans, at the stage of the study model before making miniature sets for shooting. It looks like a miniature of a miniature set. Even when I was in charge of the special art of "Nobo's Castle", I used it as a model for the study when it was submerged.
-The background of this time was a cloud of a beautiful sunset.
The appearance of the shadow is completely different from the daytime cloud I made last time. The point is to put shadows boldly with gray pastels. This is what I saw and remembered the work of the leading artist in the background of the movie, Mr. Takumi Shimakura. Mr. Shimakura is drawn with an airbrush on the large horizont (background wall) of the studio, but the process is the technique of Mr. Shimakura just by replacing the painting material with pastel. Mr. Shimakura is a master of my heart.
-Once done, it's like a real cloud.
I usually observe clouds and take photos often. If you're drawing a cloud for the first time, you may want to try drawing while looking at the picture. Once you learn how, there is no difficult process, and I feel that some people will come out with hidden talent. I really want you to practice in parent and child!
