In commemoration of the commercialization of "S.H.MonsterArts Godzilla (2002)," we asked Masaaki Tezuka, director of the 2002 theatrical film "GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA," and Yumiko Shaku, who played Akane Ieshiro, to talk about the appeal of Godzilla (2002) and precious episodes from that time.

- Thank you very much for coming to Godzilla figure for today's busy place.
This interview with the two of you is mainly about the new figure, but I would appreciate it if you could tell me about various things such as memories and recent events of "GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA" (released in 2002).

Well, when Tezuka Masaaki and Mr. Yumiko Shaku, when did the two meet again?

手塚：う～ん、どのくらいなんだろう？釈ちゃん、覚えている？

釈：あっ、思い出しました！今年（2017年）の1月にホビージャパンさんが新宿のロフトプラスワンさんで開催した、『ゴジラ×3式機龍コンプリーション』の出版記念イベントですよ！

手塚：そうか、1年も経っていないんだね。

釈：湯原博士役の宅麻伸さんや監督とも久々にお会いすることがでできて、楽しいトークをさせていただきました。
At that time, I could honestly feel the enthusiasm of the Godzilla fans who had gathered at the venue for the first time in a while. It's been 15 years since the release of "GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA," which I starred in, and I feel that this work continues to be loved and supported by many Godzilla fans. I was able to recognize it again.

手塚：『ゴジラ×メカゴジラ』の公開以来、何より釈ちゃんが、ゴジラファンの前に出ることがそうそうないことだったからね。だから貴重なトークイベントとなったよね。
In that book of Mr. Hobby Japan, although the manuscript was posted on interview with myself and myself, listening to the same words as reading literature is totally different from how to receive it.
After all, you can listen to raw talks in front of people, are not they?

釈：時間がある時にネットとかを見ていますと、手塚監督はゴジラ映画の上映会やイベントに引っ張りだこっていう感じを受けますけれども……。

手塚：いやいや、もちろん自分に声がかかれば、どこへだって参上するけれどもね。最近では、先輩のゴジラ関係者の皆さんの中でも、ご高齢で亡くなられる方がそれなりにいらっしゃるので、その方の分まで頑張らなくちゃいけないなと思っていてね。

釈：長生きしてくださいね、手塚監督！

手塚：うぅ、釈ちゃんのその言葉は涙もんだね！

- By the way, what kind of things are in the collection of their two Godzilla entanglements?

釈：私は、バンダイさんから発売された機龍のソフトビニール人形かな。それから、ヘルメットが外せる家城茜のフィギュアですね。

手塚：ゴジラは持っていないの？

釈：『シン・ゴジラ』のゴジラが一つくらいですね。

手塚：おっ、シン・ゴジラは持っているんだ。他のゴジラは？

釈：『ゴジラ×メカゴジラ』のゴジラは、当時の自分にとっては、絶対に倒さなければならない敵怪獣の存在でしたから、あえて持っていませんでした。
However, since it's been so long since the release of the work, if it's a Godzilla that appeared in "GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA" and it's a good one, I think it's okay to have at least one.
Tezuka director known as Godzilla mania, what kind of Godzilla figure do you have?

手塚：こう言うのもなんだけれども、この世の中に発売されているリアルなゴジラのフィギュアは、だいたい持ってますね。

釈：えっ、そんなに！
I knew that the director was Godzilla mania, but I did have it there.

手塚：もう自分でも数え切れないくらいの数のゴジラフィギュアが、自宅や栃木の実家にありますよ。
Even for the same thing, both play and preservation are necessary, and of course spare parts are also necessary (laugh), which inevitably has increased enormously. Most of the figures are left in the corrugated cardboard, so the wife says "When she makes shelves and decorates them with chitin, the inside of the room becomes beautiful," and each time you see the face We are (laugh).

釈：手塚監督のゴジラへのものすごい愛情を感じますね。
Everything at home and parents' house is like a Godzilla room dedicated to the director (laugh).

手塚：特に自分が監督になってからは、何もしなくても東宝さんから商品サンプルが送られて来るようになったから、そういう意味からも、本当にゴジラ映画の監督になってよかったなぁと思ったものだよ（笑）。

釈：一番最近に買ったゴジラフィギュアは何ですか？

手塚：11月3日に、新宿マルイのアネックスにあるゴジラ・ストアに行って、「やった！　ゴジラソフビをいっぱい買うぜ」と思っていたら、「お一人様一個」と書いてあって……。

釈：せっかく新宿まで買いに行ったのに、それはガッカリでしたね（笑）。

――Well, two of us came to see that we were able to see the color prototype of “Godzilla (2002)” of the S.H.MonsterArts series, which was released today from the Bandai Collectors Division.

釈：これですか、うわ～っ！カッコ良い！

手塚：撮影用のスーツみたいですね。これはよくできていますね。

釈：手塚監督、バンダイさんから発売され続けているという、このS.H.MonsterArtsのシリーズって、どういうものなんですか？

手塚：それはね、バンダイさんがこれまでに作ってきたアクションフィギュアの技術を応用して、ゴジラをはじめとして、モスラやラドン、キングギドラなどのさまざまな怪獣やクリーチャーをメインにした、アクションフィギュアのシリーズのことなんだよ。

釈：それじゃ、このゴジラのフィギュアは、ソフトビニール製の人形とは違って、いろんなところが可動することが出来て、いろんなポージングをとれるのが一番のセールスポイントなんですね。
But this is a prototype, so Tezuka's director Tezuka of Godzilla mania does not have this figure of Godzilla yet.

手塚：発売前の試作なんだから、そりゃ持っていないよ。
That's all there is to the moment I want to put Godzilla of my work on hand. As long as Bandai is available, it is okay for me to take this way as soon as this talk is over, but ... (lol).

- No no no, I am absolutely in trouble. Anyway, because it is not a product but a prototype. Well then, please have two people, hand in hand.

釈：いろんな可動部があるんですね。動かしちゃっていいんですよね。
This is amazing, amazing. It works really well.

手塚：表面のディテールがシャープに仕上っているのが、超絶に素晴らしいですね。
Moreover, it is not easy for Godzilla mania to say that everything moves so much.

釈：このゴジラのフィギュアですけれども、可動部分はどれくらいあるんですか？

- It seems that it is a very good number, and it seems there are more than 30 moving parts. Especially, there seems to be many parts of the tail, it seems that the tail contains joints for each passage.

釈：こんなに動かせるということは、ゴジラにシェーをさせることもできるんですか？

- Er, is that Sha? This is still difficult because it is a prototype, but if you become a product version you can take a shoey pose.

手塚：ゴジラのシェーがあったのは、シリーズ第6作の『怪獣大戦争』（'65年）だね。

When I asked Mr. Mizuno, who played the role of Prime Minister Machiko Tsuge during the shooting of "GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA," about that time, he said, "I was asked to do that pose for publicity, and we all did that pose. It was said that

釈：さすがゴジラマニアの手塚監督。昔のゴジラ映画のお話もキチンとその方に聞かれているんですね。

手塚：このフィギュア、頭部をよく見たら、きちんと目玉の黄色っぽさも再現されていますね。

釈：そうですよね、このゴジラは目玉が黄色っぽいんですよね。

- Yes, such details were also reproduced as a kitchen.

手塚：それからこのゴジラは、どこから見ても正面を見ているような形態になっていて、なんか常に怒ってるような雰囲気があるんだよね。

釈：同じシリーズの3式機龍も、一緒に並べたくなりますね。

手塚：それが、S.H.MonsterArtsの3式機龍は、実は4年も前に発売されていてね。けっこうな数が売れたらしいけれども、今じゃあ、プレミア価格が付いているらしいからね。
However, as Godzilla at the time of the dragon was hardly released from Mr. Bandai, the decision of this release is definitely sunny for me.

釈：じゃあ、その機龍のフィギュアで遊ぼうと思ったら、これまでは他の作品のゴジラと組ませて遊ぶしかなかったんですね。

手塚：そうそう。だからこの「ゴジラ（2002）」の発売は、本当に自分としても嬉しくてしようがないね。自分の映画に登場したゴジラが商品化されるのは、正に監督冥利につきますよ。

――It seems that the Bandai staff went to great lengths to combine this Godzilla with Kiryu so that he could pose for the poster of "GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA" when it was released.

手塚：そりゃ凄い！
That visual is produced with CG, but it is the main post with a catch phrase "Fight until being crushed!" Or "Launch, resonance, ice crush".

釈：あっ、このゴジラのフィギュア、ちゃんと頭部や顎が上を向いて、口の中の舌が見えるように作られていますね。
This is a scene in which Godzilla and Mongols fight for the first time in Hakkeijima, can you reproduce the scene where Godzilla is roaring, where the dragon becomes uncontrollable?

手塚：ゴジラが首を上げるシーンは、そのシーンだけではなくて、映画冒頭のメインタイトルが出る直前の雷を受けるシーンでもあるからね。
But even to the details, it is really well done.

- Tezuka director, please tell me the characteristics of this "Godzilla (2002)".

手塚：初監督作品の『ゴジラ×メガギラス　Ｇ消滅作戦』（'00年）のゴジラは、前作の『ゴジラ2000ミレニアム』（'99年）の時のゴジラとほぼ同様の作りで、顔や背ビレがけっこう大きめに作られていたので、『ゴジラ×メカゴジラ』では、どちらも小さくしてもらうようにお願いして、基本の姿勢だった前傾も修正して直立の形にしてもらってね。自分の求めているイメージのゴジラに可能な限り近づけてもらいました。

釈：こうやってフィギュアで見てみますと、あらためて頭の小ささが際立って感じますね。

手塚：実は、ゴジラの着ぐるみが仕上ってきたら、「ちょっと頭部がちっちゃ過ぎたかな」と思ったんですよ。
However, it looked different with the naked eye and the picture, and it looked like it was just right in the work. Shogo Toyama, who was in charge of the producer, was also pleased that "This Godzilla is cool, is the director!"

釈：これは試作品とのことですけども、実際の発売はいつ頃になるんですか？

- Although it is scheduled for April 2018, reservation of figures starts from a little early, so we already accept reservations from the end of November at internet shops and over the counter.

手塚：それじゃ、2つ、3つ、とっとと予約しなきゃな！

――To change the topic a little, please tell us about the work of “GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA” from here. First, Mr. Shaku, how did you feel when you were offered the role of the aloof heroine Akane Ieshiro?

釈：日本映画を代表するゴジラ作品に、自分も出演させてもらえることはすごく光栄なことでしたし、昔のゴジラ映画を見直して、「あぁ、なんかすごいなぁ。私もゴジラ映画の歴史に名前を残すことができるんだな」と思って、撮影前からワクワクしましたね。
I liked to take action as well, so I read the script, I felt so thrilled to the situation that "I can get into the dragon to climax and fight Godzilla with the machine dragon".

手塚：一番最初に家城茜役を釈由美子さんにと推薦したのは、プロデューサーを担当された富山省吾さんだったか、脚本の三村渉さんだったか。何人か候補の女優さんの名前が挙がったのですが、『ゴジラ×メカゴジラ』の主役に釈ちゃんを選んだのは、要は自分が好きな女優さんだったからです。
Originally I had a lot of photo collections of Natsume (laugh).

釈：えっ、自分の写真集も持っていてくださったのですか、それは今日初めて知りました。ビックリです！

- Please tell me the episode at the time of shooting.

釈：作品の撮影がだいたい夏場だったのが、基本的に暑くて辛かったですね。機龍隊のスーツを着込んで、しっかりヘルネットも付けていますから。

手塚：当初、釈ちゃんからは、「『エイリアン』（米・'79年）のシガニー・ウィーバーみたいにＴシャツやタンクトップ一枚で戦いたい」って言われたんですけれども、それじゃあ放射能に汚染されてしまうので……。

釈：ええ、そうでした。ちょっと残念でしたね。

- What was the most difficult scene taking?

釈：それは、機龍のメンテナンスブースに乗り込んでからのシーンの撮影ですね。
The set of maintenance booths move freely up and down freely, so they finally lost the sense of equilibrium.
By this time, I was physically and mentally driven. Full of battle and fighting with the dragon.
When saying "To me power!", I felt like the cry of the soul came out something was not something anymore, I felt the heartbeat and heat of the dragon straight.
It is still memorable.

手塚：あの撮影では、彼女がこんなに叫んでくれるのかと思いましたからね。そこまで役にのめり込んで演じてくれる役者さんは、そうそういませんからね。
That hard work of such a stranger is certainly coming out in the screen, is not it?

釈：クランクインの前に自衛隊に入隊して訓練をしましたけれども、その訓練をしたおかげで、機龍に乗り込む時にワイヤーで吊るされるのも全然怖くなかったですよ。

手塚：けっこう高さのあるところに、ワイヤーのロープ一本でぶら下がってね。

釈：匍匐前進や降下訓練もしたので、全身筋肉痛になっちゃって、ゴジラよりも歩き方がおかしくなりました。

手塚：降下訓練のあとが、湯原親子と語り合う防衛庁の技術研究所の屋上のシーンの撮影でね。

釈：ええ、そうでしたね。

手塚：釈ちゃんは点滴を打ちながら現場に来たんだけれども、こちらに向かって歩いて来るシーンで、テストでは地面の段差の手前でカットをかけたんですが、本番はどこまでいけるかと思ってカットをかけなかったら、案の定、その段差で転んじゃってね。

釈：本当に歩くのも大変でしたね。やっぱり苦労したことは、忘れずに覚えているものですね。

- What kind of thoughts do you have for Godzilla of this work?

釈：機龍を操縦して日本を守らなければならない自分にとっては、ゴジラは倒さなければいけない敵という存在ですが、機龍にも初代ゴジラの骨格が入っていますから、結局、同族同士の戦いという、何か戦いながらも物悲しさがありましたね。
I think one of the great attractions of "GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA" is that it's not just a story of rewarding good and punishing evil.

手塚：釈ちゃん、いいこと言ってくれるね。もちろん自分もそういう思いを込めて、この作品を作り上げました。

- If both of you are interested in Godzilla involvement, I would like to ask you ....

釈：私は先日放送された、テレビの「ゴジラ総選挙」（2017年11月12日放送済）に出演しました。
The guests who have experience appearing in Godzilla movies are Shiro Sano, Noboru Kaneko, and myself, who are Godzilla maniacs. Mr. Sano really liked "GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA". He said, "It's a masterpiece!"
Since then, Godzilla was arguing about whether it was male or female, and everyone was saying "It's a female because you feel maternity" because it's exciting.

- In "Godzilla general election", which toho monkey was voting for Mr. Shi?

釈：それについては、私、手塚監督に謝らなくちゃいけないんです…。

手塚：えっ、何、何？

釈：番組の中で、ゴジラ以外の好きな東宝怪獣のベスト１予想で、怪獣キャラクターの名前を一つ選ぶんですが、もちろん自分も最初は「3式機龍」と書いたんですけれども、そしたらスタッフさんから「となりの金子昇君も「3式機龍」って書いているよ」と聞かされたので、だったらということで「3式機龍」に横線を何本も引っ張って、小さく「ビオランテ」って書いちゃいました。手塚監督、ごめんなさい！

手塚：えっ、そうなの！「ビオランテ」なの!!

釈：手塚監督には本当に申し訳ありませんと思いつつ、泣く泣く大本命ということで、「ビオランテ」と書きました。

手塚：そうか、そういうことならしようがないな（苦笑）。
But neither Shitori nor Kaneko did not want to write both "dragon" in a daring manner. I wish Kaneko would write "3 type dragon (reform)" ... ....
Amika - chan is really kind.

釈：自分が「ビオランテ」と書いたので、収録現場の方々もけっこうびっくりされたようで、一瞬、「えっ？」と思われました。

手塚：そりゃそうだよね、釈ちゃんが「ビオランテ」と書くとは、誰も思いもよらないだろうからね。

釈：それから、「ゴジラの名シーン」ということで、『ゴジラ×メカゴジラ』からは、茜の判断でしらさぎから空中で切り離された機龍が、品川付近で暴れるゴジラを撃退すべく飛行しながら駆けつけるシーン、『ゴジラ×モスラ×メカゴジラ東京SOS』（'03年）からは、ゴジラと機龍の戦いの末に崩壊する国会議事堂のシーンが、それぞれピックアップされました。

手塚：『ゴジラ×メカゴジラ』も『東京SOS』も、きちんと特撮の名場面を採り上げてくれたんだね。
The scene where the machine dragon, separated from the Shirasagi in the air, flies over the city at night is one of the many famous scenes in the "GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA" play.
Especially the scene where the free mouth spreads with both hands behind the full moon was good.

釈：ここで手塚監督にご質問があるんですが……。

手塚：うん、どうぞ。

釈：自分も2作品のゴジラ映画に出演しまして、自分が演じた家城茜のイメージが強過ぎるんではないかと思うのですが、改めてゴジラ映画に出演することはできないんでしょうか？

手塚：いやいや、決してそんなことはないと思うよ。
Momoko Kawauchi, who played the same role as Emiko Yamane in the 22nd work "Godzilla VS Destroyer" ('95), which appeared in the first work "Godzilla" ('54) 41 years later. There are examples.

釈：そうですか。でしたら良かった。
When I appeared in "Godzilla general election", I felt the feeling that I could someday appear in a new Godzilla movie ... ....

手塚：そうそう、釈ちゃんは息子さんにゴジラ映画の英才教育をやっているの？

釈：まだ１歳で、歩き方がミニラみたいですけれども（笑）。
But, I have some Godzilla movies in order. It reacted to Mothra more than Godzilla.

手塚：それじゃあ、息子さんに釈ちゃんの出演作品を見せるのは、ずっと先のことになりそうだね。

- What is the recent status of Tezuka's director?

手塚：自分は11月3日のゴジラの誕生日を中心に、二つのゴジライベントに出席しました。
On the evening of November 2, we participated in the countdown all night of Godzilla movie at the movie theater "Minami Kaikan" in Kyoto, in cooperation with Kaneko Rikun as guests screening the two dragons. Oh yeah, Kaneko-kun said, "I also want to appear in the Godzilla movie with the same role!" From the stage.
On the next 3rd we returned to Tokyo on the way back from dragonfly and got a fun Godzilla talk with Godzilla doctors of Toho from the evening at Godzilla Festival held grandly in Shinjuku.

--- Finally, if there is a request for the future S.H.MonsterArts series ....

釈：ゴジラの2002年版がリリースされるということですけれども、それなら引き続き、ゴジラの2003年バージョンや、自分の好きなシーンである、しらさぎから空中で切り離されるシーンを再現できるの機龍のバージョンが欲しいですね。
So, if the dragon is re-released, will it be about 2 to 3 mm in size that can be put on the right shoulder of the dragon?
I hope you can give Omake the mini figure of Akane Mukiro.

手塚：そりゃ良いね！
Then, as long as you can have various versions of various versions of Godzilla of the "Tokyo SOS" version and Dragon that received damage in the previous battle, respectively. As an option, the 3 sets of the Shiragiti of the Special Self-Defense Force are also ants, and it is better if there is an absolute zero in the effect parts.
Also, I think that there are many people wanting a maintenance booth where Joko entered the dragon, so please be sure to commercialize this to Bandai as well.

Lastly, to Godzilla fans who support the S.H.MonsterArts series, I would like to say a word.

手塚：何よりこのシリーズで、自分の監督作のゴジラフィギュアが発売される時が来ようとは全然思ってもいなかったので、今回のリリースは嬉しさもひとしおですね。
This high-quality figure has a moving range that is not inferior to the costumes, so I definitely want you to be played down.
It would be best if you could purchase two, if possible, one for normal play and the other for water play, so that you can share the purpose of play.

釈：『ゴジラ×メカゴジラ』の映像を見ながら、ゴジラや機龍に同じポーズをとらせて、存分に戦わせて楽しんでもらえたらいいなと思います。

Tezuka Masaaki 【Talka · Masaki】

Born in Tochigi prefecture in 1955.
After graduating from Nihon University College of Art, he worked as a freelance assistant director on works by Kon Ichikawa and Katsumi Nishikawa, and made his first Godzilla movie in 1992 with Godzilla vs Mothra. He made his directorial debut with "Godzilla x Megaguirus G Annihilation Operation" (2000), and was in charge of Godzilla movies such as "GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA" (2002) and "Godzilla x Mothra x Mechagodzilla Tokyo SOS" (2003). In addition, he directed "Sengoku Self-Defense Force 1549" and "RESCUE WINGS", and was the director of special effects group B for "Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack" (2001).

Shaku Yumiko [Shaku · Yumiko]

Born in Tokyo in 1978.
Originally released 8 books as a gravure idol, played the first appearance in a television drama in 1999's "Twins Detective", and in October of the same year Maxi Single "Second Chance" from Media Ring Released.
In 2001, he made his first starring role in a theatrical movie "Shura Yukihime", followed by the movie "GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA" (2002) and TV drama "SKY HIGH" (2003). Currently, as an actress and talent, she continues to be active in a variety of fields, including commercials, TV dramas, movies, stage performances, variety shows, and documentaries.
